Been hitting the the Truckee River hard this week and last. I’m thinking everyone knows how low the river is going to get this summer and is taking advantage of the water now. Smart decision.
Both states are fishing well for mid-March. Still very cold at night near Truckee on the California side and it seems to be more of an afternoon bite up top here. Down through Reno and below it has been the opposite and not so good in the afternoons in the warm sun.
In Nevada I’ve been tossing the streamers from the boat and doing fairly well. Nymphing up in the riffles is good too.
In California it has been a little of everything for me. The streamers not so much, but the nymph rigs, mainly tight lining, and the dry dropper rigs are producing fish. Fish are looking up, and the big fish are looking up too. Nymph up in the mornings and when the wind starts blowing the skwalas onto the water in the afternoons, throw on the big dry. I have not seen any march browns yet here around in Hirschdale. Blue wing olives and skwalas seem to be the 2 bugs going on right now.
