Truckee River Fishing Report 1/29/13

It’s funny how with a little bit of warm weather, it will get the fish to move. The ultra frogy-ness that we’ve been fishing for the last few months on the Truckee River still has fish, but our options are opening up. You’ll now start to see fish back in tops of runs, and in faster current looking for bugs. The big blanket blue wing hatches are just about to happen down in the desert, and if last weekend was any indication, February should be good. If you’re nymphing start with a sz#18 baetis pattern, as the bugs start pop’n, move up in size to a #16. Soft hackles should be in your box, and of course, emergers, and duns. Fish will move into feeding lanes to pick off the bugs. The streamer fishing should get good with warmer water temps. Soon we’ll see skwalas too. Keep in mind though this could all turn to shit if we get warm sub-tropic storms. Lets keep our fingers crossed that February is a big snow producer with cold storms, not rain, and the flows stay stable. Our two coldest months are just about behind us.February is a fun month on the river.
