Truckee River Fishing Report 3/4/13

Fishing continues to be good and only getting better on the Truckee River in the Lake Tahoe-Truckee-Reno area. Blue wing olives are out in force on the lower sections of river sparking a lot of activity. One can go out now and not only get them on nymphs, but also on dries. You’d be surprised how good the dry fly fishing can be this time of year. The Truckee River is not really known as a dry fly fishing place, but starting around now and into spring, I feel, is the best time to get them on top. Right now we have blue wings, then we will have skwala stones, and soon after march browns. Sure we get good caddis hatches all summer long, and we have green drakes and yellow stones and the whole deal, but unless you get that good overcast day in the summer, or you stay until dark, we’re pretty much nymphing at least for the most part on the Truckee River, (Little Truckee R is a different deal). So when you call in the summer and it’s 90 out and sunny, you want to stick some fish on dries on the Truckee, I’ll tell you you should have been here in March-April.
