Things are just about to explode here on the Truckee River in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area. Like 85 in the Hirsch the last few days, summer is here, albeit early, but here. Everything is pop’n, we have carpenter ants, the big winged morsels of gluten free snacks for trouts, along with march browns, pale morning duns, blue wings, stones. Everything is going nuts right now. No green drakes yet, but I nymphed some up on one today. What do you tie on? Any of the above as far as nymphs go. If you want to dry fly fish, throw the ant on and see what happens. Even if trout aren’t rising, they’ll come an much on one. My Jesus Was a Carpenter Ant fools a lot of fish every summer, Solitudes RPS ant nails them too. (Both are available at Mountain Hardware in Truckee) We have lost some serious pounds of fish the last few weeks round here (Flows are still a bit heavy from the Hirsch on down through into Nevada) but, the fish are there.
