June is almost here, summer, and the Truckee River is still flowing. The river is up even more from last week. 320 cfs here in the Hirsch. 400cfs all the way towards Reno. Those are good flows folks.
The carpenter ants have arrived in full force. Kinda a cool sight to see if you don’t live in and around the Truckee-Tahoe area. I walked around down town Truckee yesterday evening and they were flying around hitting all the tourists, really funny stuff. If they fished they would know. Of course if you fish anywhere around here for the next week, lakes, creeks, etc, throw on a size #8 black ant just to see what happens.
Caddis are coming off big time on the Truckee RIver too. Every evening right before dark you’ll see trout poking their heads up. Nymphing with the pupa early in the day should get you fish. Caddis is the big thing on this river right next to crayfish, that makes up a big part of the Truckee River diet.
All the other bugs are out too, golden stones, and yes, green drakes. Those hatches should intensify with a tad warmer water temps, like this week.,
I just did a lot of talk about bugs, you may get lucky on top with some, but these fish like it down and dirty, remember that.
