Truckee River Fishing Report 7-18-14

Pretty good steady fishing still here on the Truckee River in the greater Lake Tahoe-Truckee-Reno area. Been doing a lot tight line nymphing in the fast stuff. Crays, stones, and caddis. Get out early before the water gets warm- the fishing is pretty good. Luckily, we’ve been getting big thunder heads every afternoon with rain, hell, the river was darn near blown out this morning. Things could get dicey by the end of this month. They will drop flows out of Lake Tahoe. No one seems to know exactly what the flows will be, but it is going to be paramount that when you fish, you fish early, and don’t fish after a certain time of the day. Right now, we’re ok. We do have water storage in Donner Lake, and Independence Lake. Both lakes are full, and it will be used, I’m told, to help supplement the water for the river. The river will be fine, and so will the fish and the fishing. We just have to educate, or I have to educate the importance of not fishing when water temps get warm. August could be record hot, or we could get a monsoonal flow with afternoon thunderstorms every day. We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed.
