Truckee River Fishing Report-8-15-15

The cork will be put in the flows out of Stampede on the Little Truckee River for the restoration/ enhancement project happening out there starting tomorrow, 8/16. The project will last for 2-3 weeks. We are asking anglers to leave the LT alone while flows will be at the minimum, 14 cfs. This is a brainchild of our local Trout Unlimited #103 chapter. The project is going to add a lot of prime water to the lower meadow section of river. The river will be deepened, boulders will be added, and trees will be put in for cover. This is kind of a huge undertaking, and it’s going to be awesome once completed. The hope is fish will hang in that lower section year round instead of just the upper section near the dam. Adding more holding water and spawning habitat is only a good thing. Will this be the best tailwater in the state? It could be in the future. It’s very exciting for me, and the local guides/ angling community up here. It’s already good, and it is going to get better.

They had the LT up to 120 cfs this last week and the fishing was stellar.

Water has been stored in Boca the last month and it looks like some of the water is coming down into the Truckee River. About 100 cfs here in the Hirsch, not bad considering our water situation. Independence Lake is still full too, and some of that water will be sent down this fall into the Truckee River. Overnight lows have been in the mid-to low 40’s. Is it o.k. to fish the river again? Well, not saying yes, or no. There will be a point where it will be fine, at least in certain sections. The Nevada side is still suffering badly from extremely low flows, but the water is cooling down there as well. Boca through the first few miles of Nevada has the highest flows on the river. I’m sure it is fine to go fish the river in the mornings. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Carp is still awesome down on the Nevada side of the Truckee River. Really fun stuff if you like an ass kicking challenge.

We will have some Pyramid Lake clinic dates set in a few. I’m sure it is going to be kind of a epic fall out at the lake this year. Big bait balls of Tui-Chubs make for some early season, exciting fishing for big Cutthroats. October through November, and into the first few weeks of December are prime time.
