Truckee River Brown Trout

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report-3-23-22

We’re enjoying some Spring weather on the Truckee River.

Can’t complain when the suns out and it’s t-shirt weather. It was a cold Winter. Feels good to put the shorts on, crack a beer, and watch the kids play in the yard in the afternoon.

Fishing is firing off pretty good. I’ve been spending all my time up around here on the California side of the Truckee River. It is good, good, good. I’m sure it’s great down on the NV side too, but hard to beat Spring in the Hirsch. Probably no other place I’d rather be. I should be out working everyday, but folks always want to come in July when it’s 100 degrees out. C’mon guys, get on the good foot and get fishing this Spring.

Every style of fishing is good. Streamers, and nymphs, and dry fly fishing on certain days. Skwalla’s, and blue wing olives. The midges should start tapering off here soon. Fish inside to outside. The big fish are in tight this time of year, especially when the flows come up. A dry dropper rig is sometimes your best weapon to stay away from the fish and cast tight up along banks. I love fishing that way.

Flows have come up. 500 and change here, and higher down the river in the canyons. Pretty good visibility too, nice little color to ‘er.

Truckee folks were wishing for a March Miracle. We didn’t get it. Winter is still not over in the mountains. We’ll see. The snowpack at al the North Lake Tahoe ski areas are at average for the date. Pretty unbelievable being it’s hardly snowed since December. December was huge for us. We are going into this summer with more snowpack than last year. The main good news, Boca, a major reservoir for inflow, is full to the top. It was not, last this time last year. Ain’t saying it’s going to be a great water year, of course not, but shouldn’t be as bad as last fall. Again, time will tell.
