Winter on the Truckee River, though it don't feel like it yet. Cold overnight lows, but mild afternoons. We do need some weather.
Flows have remained really good so far.. Around 400 here in Hirshdale. That is a pretty good early Winter flow. Of course it's higher if you go out East on the lower river.
Do not start early if you're fishing on the CA side. Very cold early. Wait till she warms up some.
On the Nevada side. Little bit different story. Not nearly as cold, and a much better option if you're looking for more active fish through out the day.
Fish the frog water. Fast water is not your friend this time of year. Fish do move up in runs to feed, but only for a short window when the water warms. Nymphing of course is always good, but streamer fishing the frog water can pull some big fish out of their Winter time blues.
