Breaking a cold snap on the Truckee River.
Still very cold at night, but warming up some in the afternoons. Will probably stay like this until we get some weather again, maybe mid-month. Good news, flows are really great for December. Typically the river is pretty low around now. 430 cfs, and over 500 out East is really good for us.
What's that mean for fishing? Well, nymphing you'll always get some. Streamer fishing will be poor.
Remember to fish slow walking pace water this time of year. Frog water. Anywhere you go up and down the river. Fish the water opposite of what you'd fish in the Summer.
The number once question I get, "when is the best time to fish the Truckee River?" Nymphing wise, it don't matter. You can always get some nymphing.
But...
I like all Winter through late Spring. Why? I'm obsessed with streamer fishing and that's the best time. Post spawn, meaning now-through spring, is the best streamer fishing on the Truckee River. Big fish time. Once you see one of those alligator browns chase a streamer, it's life changing. I could go on and on about streamer fishing, however, I'll wait on that.
Happy hunting.
