Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Report 12-9-14

Been real tough for me to decide where to go fish lately, Pyramid Lake, or the Truckee River. Since the Truckee River has some water in it once more, I’ve been spending most of my time on it, mostly just to find out where the fish are again. The thing with Pyramid Lake though is that you get Pyramid fever. It’s hard to go long without feeling the pull of those big cutthroats that inhabit the lake. It’s a tough job but someones got to do it. Pyramid Lake is going into winter mode. The water is getting colder and the bite is slowing down a bit. Winter, less fish are caught, but oftentimes they’re bigger. What’s big? A fish of lifetime if you’re into that kinda thing. Nymphs under the indo, copper johns, balanced leeches, etc, retrieving flies on the shooting head, buggers, popcorn beetles, and retrieving nymphs on the floating line with no indicator are all producing. Be prepared for some raw weather out there. It’s winter again this year and it will be nasty at times out at the lake. Breaks with with a good flask of whisky and the heater cranked in the truck waiting for the rods bent in the lineup is Pyramid in the winter.
