Truckee River Fishing Report- Pyramid Lake Fly Fishing Report- 2-23-15

Well, we went from t-shirt weather back to freezing your ass off weather in less than 24 hours. I told everyone that winter is far from over. All we need now is the high pressure that has been siting off the coast all winter to continue to move west across the Pacific. With a little luck we can get some storms to slide on down from Alaska. Lets keep our fingers crossed, but the pattern looks much more promising now than it was a few months ago.

The Truckee River will transition a bit with this colder weather. Seriously, it was warmer here in Truckee last week than when I went and visited the in-laws in Sacramento. The fish that were moving into faster water will probably move back a bit into more late winter type water. Not the frog water of December, nor the fast water of August, but somewhere in between. I could be wrong, but trout are finicky and they will adjust when the water temp lowers again. Nymphs and dries, blue wing olives to be precise, and streamers. The streamer bite really starts to get going about mid-Feb, especially on the Nevada side of things. Helps if you have a boat and you can hit the banks. Brown trout get out of their water doldrums and need a big meal right around now. I usually get my biggest browns now until about may, and then again in July and August, not the fall months that everyone thinks. Of course you could go and harass them on their beds in the tribes in the fall, but that is not my thing. Exciting stuff coming up on the Truckee River.

At Pyramid Lake the east wind blew good yesterday and almost everyone I knew caught fish. The wind brought the fish up onto the beaches. The weather will be much more conducive for fly fishing at Pyramid Lake this week instead of the sunny high pressure ridge we’ve had. Of course if you can get your ass out of bed and fish first light, great, if not, stick around until last light. If you have a good wind blowing in and maybe some cloud cover then never mind that because you may have an all day bite, especially as we’re heading into spring. I like March out at the lake. Remember we have a Pyramid Lake clinic on March 14th.
